BDM102: 83nean Warrior
By: Bob Castilla
2010 was a very good running year not only for me but also to all 83neanrunners. We have a lot of short & long distance runs. In fact, I was transformed from a mere jogger to a runner, then marathoner and eventually an ultra runner. Nonetheless, I consider myself still a beginner in running considering I just took up running only a year back, May 2010 to be exact. Given this , I still need a lot of knowledge in the science of running. Alam ko naman madami pa ako kakainin kanin pagdating sa running. Hehehe. . . For me, in the field of running, everyday is learning from oneself and from other running peers.. I must continue and search to learn. I regularly have a practice run even w/o an official race so that I’m prepared always and my
conditioning is in great shape.
conditioning is in great shape.
Our 2010 official last race before Christmas was the Corregidor International Half-Marathon (CIHM) in the historic island fortress. We race also before New Year at the Ateneo De Naga University Alumni 5km run hosted by Batch 86 plus our own Batch 83 fun run dubbed Atenoe2Ateneo (7kms) in the foothills of Pacol,
Naga City.
Naga City.
From time to time this 2010 & 2011, I visited the blog site of Ret. Gen. Jovie Narcise, at www.baldrunner.com, the man known in the running community as BaldRunner (BR), the foremost ultramarathon advocate in the Philippines. There I always view the schedule of his running events &
stories and began interested in the Bataan Death March (BDM)

The very name itself evokes heroism and perseverance beyond great difficulties. For me to be able to join and finish the BDM ultramarathon is a priceless personal achievement. And in its unique way, the BDM allows me and all the other participants to be able to pay homage to the countless Filipino heroes of WWII by tracing the long and arduous route from the province of Bataan to Pampanga.
Registration
When I search for BDM, it has two categories, 102 km & 160 km. To qualify for the 160 km distance, you must at least finish a 100 km run in a year prior to the race sked. For the 102 km, you must at least finish a marathon or an ultramarathon race. Looking back at my previous races, I figured I can qualify for the BDM 102. But when I further searched for the registration, I noticed that registration for the BDM was already closed since December 15, 2010. I decided to send an email to BR asking him if I can still qualify to join the BDM102. Luckily, I got a positive reply a week before the first test run (Jan 15, 2011) but was advised to make a deposit for the registration fee on or before the deadline of January 14, 2011. In BR response to my query, he attached the registration form. When I got the go signal from BR that I can join the race and before I made the deposit, I sent an email to 83neanrunners whom I know are qualified to join in the BDM. But only one replied and he is sick at that time. He is our “Maestro”, Vicboy De Lima. Time is running out so I send already my registration form to BR January 11, 2011 and on the last day of the deadline for the regs fee, January 14, 2011, a Friday, I made the deposit to BR Events & Management at the Allied Bank. That Friday night, Maestro called me & he told me that he was still recovering and that he will not be joining
this year edition but instead next year (2012). I told him that I was formally registered in the BDM102.

First Test Run 01/15/11
Two weeks before the test run, I was not able to have my regular practice runs due to the fact that I’m resting fully my swollen ankle incurred in a basketball game last December 2010. But I noticed that my swollen ankle is not fully healed despite some therapeutic massage(s).But still decided to soldier on and join the test run w/c will start around 9pm at Km mark 00 in Mariveles, Bataan to Km mark 50 in Abucay in Bataan. Barely a week before the scheduled test run, I made 3 consecutive practice runs of 8km, 10km & 12km, respectively. I need to have a support crew since this is a race w/o the usual water/aid station. Luckily I got a support crew from our company in Calixto, our driver w/ his van and Joey, a merchandiser. A day before the run, I prepared all the needed things in the race. We left Manila at around 4pm and ate along the way in a carenderia in Balanga City. We arrived in Mariveles an hour before
At BDM Km 00 before the run
the assembly time of 9pm. I immediately find the BDM Shrine where the starting area will be set up. There I met familiar faces in the running community and as usual I ‘m in the company of Fards’s mistah Marlo Guloy and have some photo ops w/ him, other runners at the park After all runners were processed by BR’s staff, the race promptly started at 10pm. I have only my headlights to combat the dark & cold of the night. It took me 6 hrs and 12 mins to finish the first test run and was rank 24th overall out of 77 runners. After also some photo ops at Km mark 50 and BR, we repaired back to Manila.
Last test run 02/12/11
I encountered a problem w/ my 2nd test run with regards to my support crew. Our driver had a family emergency that’s why I decided to join the test run w/o my usual support crew. What I did is to contact Fards’ Mistah in Marlo Guloy. Luckily, I was warmly accommodated and I was picked-up in Munoz, QC in the early morning for the 6 am assembly time. This time, starting point will be in Km mark 50 in Abucay, Bataan to Kkm mark 102 in San Fernando, Pampanga, a total of 52 kms. Marlo & I had a good run considering it was a cloudy morning. It was past 10 am when the heat of the sun attacked us but we were prepared for that. It took me 6 hrs & 29 mins to finish the run and was ranked 19th placed overall out of 77 runners who started at the finish line but only 60 runners managed to complete the entire route. Improving.
Training
Test runs are a recon run conducted for all runners to familiarize themselves with the actual route of the race, what strategy and plans to apply and what type of gadgets/apparel needed. In between those test runs and before D-Day, I ran daily on weekdays, improving from 7 kms to 12 kms and back to back long runs in the weekend for 20 to 30 kms distance and even more. On weekday runs, sometimes I had to run a 10 km in the morning and another 15 kms in the afternoon. I had also to simulate runs at night in our subdivision to familiarize myself running in the dark. I made also some heat training during weekend wherein I run under the heat of the sun mostly in the morning from 8 am to 12 noon. A few afternoon runs were mixed into the sked. Also, I did a lot of uphill runs at my place in Bagumbong in North Caloocan which is a hilly type area traversing to Meycauayan, Bulacan. Those practice runs I had to do it all by myself w/o a buddy runner. These kinds of runs I find boring but I had to do it to accomplish my goal of finishing the BDM for the glory
and pride of ADENBatch83. I never miss any weekend runs after I registered.

Briefing & CLP 02/22/11
Few days before the BDM 102 and 160 kms, a briefing and carbo-loading party were scheduled by the race organizer (RO) for all the runners of these two events at the AFP Officer’s Clubhouse, Camp Aguinaldo. BDM 160 kms (longest edition) was scheduled a week ahead of the BDM 102 kms for the reason that the RD would concentrate in the management of the race, to avoid the heat of the sun (summer is coming in) & of course BR could not be in two places for the finish line w/ a distance of 58 kms at the same time. The rules and regulation of this running event was discussed in detail by the race director (RD). This was also the occasion for the distribution of the race packets, tarps for the support vehicle, submission of medical certificate, camaraderie among ultra runners and the carbo-loading itself. Others details of the race were also discussed particularly on confusing intersections, race marshals, ambulance, undetermined check points and honesty in the coursed of the race as everyone is deputized also as marshal to report untoward and suspicious incidents

D-Day minus 1
This day was all preparation for me. I had to check all the things needed for the race from A to Z. My support vehicle & crew were all set including food & drinks (water, Gatorade, Pocari sweat & Mountain Dew). I already attached my race bib number in my short, shirts to wear, shoes, socks, gadgets, vitamins and others for my personal necessity. I advised also one of my staff to pick-up the shirt at Maestro office to be worn in the last 5 km of the race. This shirt is special to me as Vicboy told me that it will bring honor & pride to ADENBatch83 as it has our Batch logo and a Dean Karnazes quote at the back which reads “Endurance Never Sleeps”. Prior to the preparation, I had my last run in the morning, a short 7 km. I have my usual food intake for the day. I told also my wife to prepare the rice, pork (Giniling) & boiled eggs) to be brought the following day. Lastly, I had a lot of sleep.
D-Day 03/05-06/11
I felt very relaxed when I woke up past 8 in the morning. All the things needed were already set but I still needed to double check everything. I’m monitoring the blog site of BR and there he has an update especially on the weather & reminding us runners to have a safe trip to Mariveles, Bataan. An update also was put there that some BDM 160 participants are racing with us. Hehehe. . . Malupit talaga mga ultra runners! They are pushing themselves to the limits. That’s normal among ultra runners. I was pick-up in my house past 4 in the afternoon and we headed for Bataan. Along the way, we passed at SM San Fernando to buy some additional food but we got caught in traffic there due to its 3-day sale but we manage to get out quickly. It’s raining when we approached Bataan and our van needed to slow down due to the wet and condition of the roads. During this time, I took my dinner inside the van and afterwards changed to my running attire. We arrived in Mariveles past the 9 pm assembly time. I was dropped off at the BDM Shrine and most of the runners are all there. I immediately look for BR staff & made the check-in and afterwards do some usual stretching. While doing it, I was called by some top runners in Mac Milan & Moses Moreno as they do also their stretching’s. I roamed around the park and find myself in the company of familiar faces in Marlo Guloy, Patrimonio Brother Bong & Pat, Benedict Balaba and several other runners and do some chats. The time is 9:40 pm and BR made the announcement and the short program was started. Few reminders were made by BR, especially on the finish line that it will end in San Fernando, Pampanga and not in Capas, Tarlac. Everybody laughed as he was referring to all the runners particularly the BDM 160 participants last weekend who are with us. Baka kasi sa sobrang excitement eh dumirecho ng Tarlac. Hehehe. . . After singing the National Anthems of Japan, the USA and The Philippines, the countdown begun and the BDM 102 got underway.
Km mark 00 to 07
From the starting line, I walked due to the bulk of the runners and when I had my space free-up, I run together w/ Marlo. After 5 mins of running, my support crew handed to me my hydration bottle and I was left by my running buddy. I instructed again my support crew to be positioned at the Km 7 mark for my usual intake of water. This part is the most inclined portion of the race. As I approach the uphill portion, I walk, run, walk and run, walk & run. I’m preserving my energy and my legs. During this time, I was closing in at the Patrimonio Brothers who will also doing run, walk & run strategy at the uphill part until we reached the flat surface after km 7. Many runners are walking most of this part. I never saw a single participant run continuously.
Km 7 to 14
I had a short stop at past km 7 to have my drinks and instructed my support crew to be positioned after every 5 kms. During this portion of the run, I was with Bong & Pat having our 10/1 strategy of 10 mins running & 1 min walking and we did it consistently. These two brothers have a good race strategy that I can learn from. Sumusunod lang ako kasi wala ako timer eh. Buti sila meron watch. Hehehe. . . We continue to run together until we pass-by Marlo between km mark 14 to 21. Still I felt fine by this time and strong. I had short stop at my crew at km 26 and took some drinks and chocolate.
Km 30 to 40
Still running w/ Pat & Bong and doing our 10/1 strategy, I heard the two talk and planning to adjust their strategy at 10/2 but they remain doing 10/1 as I did also. We have some instance that we did not follow the 10/1 due to the fact that the route is downhill. We just laughed at this and continue our run. We run fast at the downhill portion and as usual all uphill part, we walked. As they stop at their crew, they told me to share w/ them the drinks and food. Nahihiya na nga ako kaya I decided to let them go as I stop at my own crew between km 40 to 50 and besides they are strong runners. Malakas ung magkapatid eh at maganda ang strategy & teamwork as Pat dictated where to walk & run and at the same, they pace each other. Ganito ang kailangan sa mga ultra distance para di boring. At this distance also, I eat rice and pork (Giniling) for about 3 to 4 spoon and have some drinks of water plus my multi vitamins.
Km 50 to 60
When I reached km 50, BR was there checking with all the runners. There also was my crew but they fell asleep so I decided not to wake them up as they are having their rest and continue to run. I had to pee at this time in one corner and I remember this is my 4th or 5th time now. At this distance, I felt that my head is so heavy and leaning towards sleeping. So I decided to sit in one of the waiting shade to relax myself. While there, a runner pass-by, saw me & shouted by asking if I’m ok. I told him that I’m resting. I decided to catch-up w/ him and eventually got to know each other’s name. He told me that maybe I need to take salt and or soft drinks as I am already losing sodium in my body. His name is Atty. Jon Lacanlale, a BDM 160 top 2 finisher. He is doing s slow pace strategy due to his right leg injury incurred in last week BDM race. We ran together and have some chat. He told me to be with him at the designated place of his crew so that he could give me the needed intake. When we stop at his support vehicle, I took the salt and coke and eventually felt fine and stronger. We continue to run and do some talk about running. I told him that he is extraordinary having ran the BDM 160 last week and now the BDM 102. He told me that he wants to have a record having finished the BDM back to back. Grabe! Matindi na ultra runner talaga. Galing!
Km 60 to 70
I continue to run with Jon. He told me that if I want to go ahead, I may do so because he is slow. He is having a 2/2 running strategy – 2 mins run & 2 mins walk. I told him I will pace with him. But sometimes he is ahead as I need to stop at my support vehicle & sometimes also I was ahead of him when he stop at his crew. I observed that his support crew is well trained having been a BDM veteran & of course, of the just concluded BDM 160 where Jon ranked 2nd to Wilnar Iglesia. During this distance also, I met & paced with Carlito Buenaventura. I knew him already during our last test run. He is 25 y/o engaged in construction business. We do a lot of running together and have some fun chats. Suddenly, he disappears from my sight. Also, I had the feeling that I had to visit the rest room. Hehehe. Luckily, I had to rush to a carwash and look for the comfort room (CR). There, I released what must be released. What a relief! Then, I continue to run and run. I was looking for my support crew & need to take my breakfast now. There ahead, my support vehicle is waiting for me & I immediately took my breakfast, again with some spoon of rice & pork and the usual intake of water & soft drinks plus again my multivitamins. After few kilometers of running, I was again attacked by the call of nature and I had to release it in a gasoline station CR. Hahahaha. At this point in time, I was shaking my head. My time is being eaten by what was happening to me. As I continue my run, I was offered by some support crew of other runners with sandwich, coffee and Gatorade. I took only the sandwich and drinks 2 glass of the energy drink. Maybe after 2 or 3 kms of running, I was again looking for a CR. I told my support team to look for a gas station ahead. As I was running, our van was park at a Gasoline station then I immediately told the gasoline attendants
If I could used the CR. Upon giving the go signal, I rush to the CR & put all the waste. I was angry with myself & confused with my time as I had no wristwatch and or timer. So I decided to run, run, run & catch-up with some runners.
KM 70 to 80
I was catching up now with my lost time. I increased my running pace. I keep on asking people of the time as I pass-by. I could no longer remember the time, just run & run but I felt fine. After few kms of running under the heat of the sun, I saw again Carlito and run together. I told him that we must catch-up with Jon because he has a very good strategy of 2/2. He told me that he will follow me. We did a lot of run, walk, and run strategy of Galloway. When I got to approach Jon, we continued to talk about his running the BDM, his training & other runs. I asked him if I could make it to the finish line, he told me that I can make it even I walk now I but don’t walk it like under the moon. I & Jon still manage to pace with each other until such time that he let me go. I instructed again my support team not to be positioned this time not every 5 kms but instead every 3 kms due to the heat of the sun. I told Joey, my crew to prepare water w/ ice & the face towel. Every time I approach my support vehicle, I made sure to have myself refreshed with cold ice water and the towel. I had the feeling sometimes while running and talking to some runners & support crew that I getting fatigued.. Nakakadala! Parusa sa sarili. Nagbayad ka na nga eh papahirapan pa ang sarili. Parang ayaw munang sumali uli sa mga runs. Pero pag natapos mu eh naghahanap ka uli masasalihan. Hehehe. . . Walang kadala-dala! As I pass by several BR checkpoints, my number & time were recorded. He had also some marshals who are positioned in the place that we cannot see them but then manage to approach us in a surprising manner. This is made to ensure that cheating is avoided in the race as other runners are sometimes tempted to do mischief. Hehehe. . .
Running under the sun with Jon (R) and Carlito (B)
KM 80 to 90
As I continue running, Jon is still shadowing me. I knew that because he is a strong runner even he is injured. Magaling talaga dumiskarte. In one of our chat, He told me that the sun is becoming hotter, and he added that, many will not make it to the finish line especially those that are not running and only walking. Still feeling good and strong, I increased my pace a little but need to apply Jon strategy of 2 mins run & 2 mins walk. Since I do not have the timer, I count 1 to 60 then I walk, then count again 1 to 60 while walking, then run. I continue to do it, again and again and again and again and again. I have no choice but to have my own strategy. Also, I asked people about the time when I pass-by so that I know what to do. Mahirap pala pag walang timer eh. Mahal kasi ang mga running watch. Hindi ko kaya ma afford. Hehehe. . . . I still have my normal pace at this distance and I felt good and stronger hoping that I will not be injured or something bad happens. Even though I knew at this point in time that I can make it, I never think of going it easy or taking time to relax. Hindi ako nagkokompyansa. Mahirap na, Anything could happen. All in my mind was to finish the race for the love of ADENBatch83 as Allen Tolledo always utters and put in the emails. This motivates me a lot. I was running alone at this distance and still going strong.
KM 90 to 100
While on this stretch, I had to pass 2 familiar faces who are runners also but I don’t know their names but they belong to a certain team. I could not recall their team anymore. They keep on shadowing me and when I stop to have my usual drinks & ice cold water refreshment, they overtook me. When I ran again, I catch-up with them, overtook them and was ahead of them. This happens several times as I was on my pit stop. I notice also that their support crew are pushing them to catch-up with me and maybe overtake me eventually. But I noticed now that they are slow, I think this is due to the heat of the sun. Having that situation, I keep on running & observed myself if I could still increase my pace which I did gradually. While running, I saw again another runner but still he is ahead of me. When I’m closing in him, I was surprised that he called my name. He is Mac Milan, one of the top runner who got injured in the left knee. He told me that Moses Moreno, sprained his ankle, another top runner who declared himself did not finished (DNF). You must inform the RD if you want to declare yourself as DNF w/c you must state the reason and the place. He narrates further that he walked from km 80 until the time he saw me. I was hoping that he finished ahead as expected. He asked for water so I gave him & instructed my support team to assist him. I told him that I must go now and he let me go. Still I continue with my pit stop and refresh myself. This time now, I think of what Fards wrote in the email. He said there that he is congratulating me in advance for my BDM 102 because I have the capacity to finish it. Thanks Fards for believing in me. Also, what motivates me more is what Noel “Ghibz” Guevarra texted me a day before my BDM which say, Makes us proud! And last but not the least, Vic “Macky” Delima, our Maestro constant call to me that I could make it to the finish line. Thanks for all the inspirations! I feel great and even more became stronger even the heat covers me all. I had my face protected with sun block & shades and my usual running long sleeves. I had my heat training so I’m not worried about it.
KM 100 to 102
When I saw the km marker, I was smiling already as I knew in a short period of time, I can do it now. It’s become hotter now and it’s time to change my third shirt to that of “Endurance Never Sleeps” from Vic but I still need to cover it with my long sleeves. Masusunog ako eh. Pasensiya na Maestro as you advised me to wear it in the last 5 kms. Come km mark 100, I removed my long sleeve, hydration belt main & gave it to Joey, my support crew. I told Joey and Calixto to position them near the finish line for the photoops. So I continue to run & increased my pace as I saw a lady runner whom I could catch-up with. I become more aggressive when I’m closing in because I noticed that she is very slow now and eventually overtook her in the last 500 meters. After passing her, I had to sprint now to the finish line and the rest is history as I conquered the BDM102. I was greeted & congratulated by some runners and got the traditional hug from BR. At this point of time I felt good and still strong. There, he gave the BDM trophy, Medal & the souvenir’s shirt. Then he told me that I was ranked # 29 overall. After that, I went to BR staff and ask what, was my official time. The staff replied & told me that I completed the course in 14 hrs & 42 mins. I’m surprised with my time. I thought I was near the late runners. Jon also arrived & finished the race. He then called me & talked and I congratulated him of his back to back BDM record and thanked his as well for the help he extended to me. My support team is now waiting for me so I change my clothes and told them to have our lunch as 1 o’clock is approaching. But they told me that their stomach is full. While changing my clothes, several runners pass-by including Mac. I told him to run or walk fast but he replied he could not. Anyway, he still finished the race but frustrated with his injury. We eventually headed for Manila w/ my team & Mac up to my house in Caloocan. We dropped all the things that were used in my run. After a few minutes, I took my shower, rest & made me sleep. The following day, I had a muscle pain on both my thighs but suffered 2 blisters on my left foot finger & forefoot. It was Tuesday, March 7, that I checked the blog site of BR and there I saw the official result of our race. A few more days, I found out also that of the 142 brave warriors who troop at the starting line, only 112 made it to the finished line. 30 runners declared themselves DNF. Luckily, I survived the BDM safely, with no injury and smiling.

Ayaw ko na sana gumawa ng write-up kasi pagnaaalala ko ung test runs at race eh nanliliit ako as compare to other runner pero di naman ako nahihiya. Karamihan kasi don sa mga runners are rich. Lesson Learned
As I mentioned earlier, I’m still a beginner in running and needs a lot to learn as knowledge is power. Here are some during my BDM 102 race:
1. Plan, decide and register early if you intend to participate in a road race.
2. Need to study & learn of the body minerals/nutrients lost during the run & what to do or what to intake.
3. Train support team so that they become more efficient.
4. Need a timer.
5. Be on time & at least ahead 1 hour before the assembly time to avoid cramming.
6. Take medicine to prevent more bowel movement.
7. Plan well your strategy.
8. Rest, sleep & sleep more.
Train and practice moreThank you, thank you
