JEFF GALLOWAY: A CARPE DIEM TEACHER
By: Vicboy de Lima
One of my favorite movies is Dead Poets Society. In the movie, the central character John Keating (played by Robin Williams) teaches, thru the use of unorthodox methods, and inspires his students to aim for something much bigger in their life.
Carpe Diem. Seize the day was their battle cry.
Listening to the 3-hour talk of Jeff Galloway last Feb 2, 2011 at the Colegio San Agustin gym, one cannot help but be inspired and aim for greater glory in running. This 1972 US Olympic team member is a carpe diem teacher because he inspires and, at the same time, provides the tool (unorthodox for some) to make our vision come true now.
Vicboy listening to running tips from Jeff Galloway.
As the introductory chapter of his book “Galloway Training Program” states “Jeff’s specialty is maximizing the enjoyment and satisfaction of running, while minimizing the time spent, the injuries and the fatigue. He keeps innovating and articulating techniques which help average people enjoy running more, run faster and reduce injuries.” And the innovative tool that has made Jeff famous and iconic among global running enthusiasts is the Galloway Run Walk Run Method.
What? Walk while running a marathon? Yup. You heard and read it clear.
The Galloway Method, when followed regularly, will, among other things:
- Virtually erase fatigue with each early break. Keeps you fresh for a strong finishing kick of a half or full marathon.
- Allow those with some type of previous injuries to knees, ankles, hips, feet, etc. to train for a half marathon or full marathon without further injury.
- Allow those using it to improve by 10 to 40 minutes in their full marathon compared with running continuously (3 to 15 minutes in a half marathon).
For those Batch 83 runners who would like to know more about the Galloway Run Walk Run Method, I bought two Galloway books which were autographed by the author himself:
- The Galloway Training Programs
- Boston Marathon: How To Qualify.
Thes 2 books will be added to our growing collection of running books which Batch 83 runners can borrow in their quest to elevate our running experiences
In closing this blog write up, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to Jeff Galloway for coming over to the Philippines and sharing his wealth of knowledge with us.
A big thanks to the people behind the talk event - - Jaymie Pizarro and Lit Onrubia. They have made a great service to the local running community by bringing in a speaker of Jeff Galloway’s caliber. Hopefully, he will not be the last.
And to my fellow runners and classmates of the Ateneo de Naga High School Class of 1983 who wish to finish for the first time a half marathon and/or full marathon, we will be there to help you . And our confidence in our ability and resolve to be of help got a boost from hearing and reading of the wisdom of Jeff Galloway.
We will truly seize the day.
